First Aid for Sprains and Strains

We have all suffered from strains and sprains and we should all know how to apply first aid for them. During a work out, it is possible to twist your ankle, catch yourself from a fall and strain your wrist or turn your knee the wrong way. To make the injured area feel better, you spend time in pain wondering what steps to take.
First aid applied right away can help reduce the pain and cut down the recovery period.

Use the RICE method as soon as you can.

R is for Rest – Try not to bother the area of concern at all. This may be hard to do, though, in the case of an ankle or knee. The area that is injured will heal more quickly with a lot of rest.

I is for Ice – Swelling can be stopped by placing ice on the injury. For 10 or 15 minutes, you should apply this method.

C is for compression – A good compression can be obtained with an ace bandage encircling the hurt area. Make sure it is sufficiently tight, but loose enough for adequate circulation.

E is for Elevate – So it is elevated above the heart, place the injured area there so the swelling is helped. Use a pillow to elevate knees and ankles while reclining. A sling may be productive for use on wrists and arms.

There are also other productive treatments for sprains and strains.

Try anti-inflammatory drugs. It might help to use ibuprofen which is sold over the counter. Make certain that you read and follow the label’s instructions.

Aromatherapy can be productive in treating sprains as well. Chamomile or rosemary should be added to a cold compress and applied to the effected area, and also consider using lavender. There can also be an application of Helichrysum to the area that is affected. The reduction of bruising is known to be assisted with this.

The application of first aid ASAP is one of the major important items in the treatment of strains and sprains. The earlier the better to put ice on the injury and elevate it.

Get medical attention if you suspect a break. Take note of the ROM and circulation. You cannot always see a broken bone with your eyes. An x-ray will catch it if there is any break.

If you are not certain of something, look for treatment medically. Rather than keeping the injury untreated, it is advisable to have your health care provider take a look at it.
